Family Recipes

This page is dedicated to the recipes that have been handed down from earlier generations, landing up, with some variations, on our tables today. Food - the smell, the texture, and of course, the taste can evoke long-forgotten childhood memories of family meals eaten with those who are no longer with us.


Eggs Zucchini by Keren Or Kutcher


This recipe belonged to Sarah Simchovitch (née Birnbaum), my late grandmother on my mother's side. Apparently, you gave her some basic ingredients and the woman somehow managed to squeeze out a whole feast out of them. I didn't get to know her or my granddad Moshe, who passed away a decade before I got my first whiff of middle eastern air. Nana Sarah sadly suffered from countless ailments, including Alzheimer disease in her later years, but I had my picture taken with her when I was two on one of her good days. She recognized my mother, her youngest, who took care of her till I came along, and realised that I was her granddaughter. It was such a good day for her that she did what she always did and stirred the conversation towards the subject of fine Polish dining.


Dad jokingly calls this recipe a Polish scramble.


Ingredients:

  • Six medium zucchinis

  • A small white onion

  • Two large eggs

  • Thinly sliced parsley (optional)

  • Some salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and basil to your liking.


The Polski how to:

  • Chop your onion.

  • Fry until golden.

  • Peel the zucchinis and slice into small cubes.

  • Fry until softened.

  • Introduce the onion to the zucchini family.

  • Add the eggs and mix.

  • Spice it all up.

Can be served hot or cold, with a little salad.


Eat Bubala, it's good for you!



Milk Soup by Anton Smith


I've just been reading Cesia Suknik's history and noticed that her mother used to make a soup with "noodles and milk". A similar soup used to be made by Debbie Smith - chicken stock, milk, lokshen and mixed vegetables - Macedoine style. She also used to put in lots of fresh peas. Due to the pea content, I used to call it pea soup but mum gently corrected me - it was milk soup. Mum used to make it and subsequently I did as well. So 3 generations of milk soup cooks.
